- About Jupiter
The earliest known records of colonization in the Jupiter area date back to 1565, when Florida was occupied by the Spanish.
Originally, the town we know as Jupiter was called “Hobe,” after the Hobe Indians (the land’s original inhabitants). Several subsequent misspellings and mistranslations by mapmakers led the town to be called “Jove,” which was then misconstrued as the Latin translation of “Jupiter,” the chief Roman deity, god of weather and sky, whom the Greeks knew as Zeus.
Later, a neighboring community named itself “Juno Beach,” after Jupiter’s wife Juno, whom the Greeks referred to as Hera.
Jupiter is famed for its major historical landmark, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. Complete in 1860, the 105-foot tall lighthouse was painted a distinctive shade of red in 1910, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973.
Today, owners of Jupiter, FL real estate and their guests can tour the lighthouse throughout the week (Tuesday through Sunday).
Jupiter is an appealing town focused on a high quality of life and local comforts. Those who own Jupiter, FL real estate know that the Treasure Coast is one of the best spots in the United States for year-round outdoor recreation. In the vicinity of downtown Jupiter, there are literally dozens of parks, each offering a unique outdoor experience.
From a canoe trip down the Intracoastal Waterway to a sunset stroll down a white sand beach; from scuba diving to jet skiing to luxury cruises; and from golf to tennis and more, there’s always something to do in the Jupiter vicinity.
For water lovers, the Treasure Coast is surely a treasure. Opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling abound, and some of the best scuba diving on the East Coast can be experienced just outside the Jupiter Inlet.
The warm waters of the Gulf Stream create tropical conditions on the over 10 miles of reef line, and the gentle current is perfect for drift diving.
A number of wrecks in the area provide interesting dives for more experienced recreational divers. Tours are available for divers of all skill levels, as are lessons and rental gear.
Great snorkeling experiences can be found at Carlin Park beach in Jupiter, as well as at Coral Cove Park in Tequesta and at Gulfstream Park in Gulfstream.
For those who prefer to stay dry and warm, the beaches near Jupiter, FL real estate have plenty to offer. Most beaches offer picnic facilities, public restrooms, grills, refreshments, and reserved shelters for larger gatherings.
