About Jupiter
The earliest known records of colonization in the Jupiter area date back to 1565, when Florida was occupied by the Spanish. Originally, the town we know as Jupiter was called "Hobe," after the Hobe Indians (the land's original inhabitants). Several subsequent misspellings and mistranslations by mapmakers led the town to be called "Jove," which was then misconstrued as the Latin translation of "Jupiter," the chief Roman deity, god of weather and sky, whom the Greeks knew as Zeus. Later, a neighboring community named itself "Juno Beach," after Jupiter's wife Juno, whom the Greeks referred to as Hera.
Jupiter is famed for its major historical landmark, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. Complete in 1860, the 105-foot tall lighthouse was painted a distinctive shade of red in 1910, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1973. Today, owners of Jupiter, FL real estate and their guests can tour the lighthouse throughout the week (Tuesday through Sunday).
Jupiter is an appealing town focused on a high quality of life and local comforts. The Jupiter Riverwalk, a 2.5-mile pedestrian and bicycle path currently nearing completion along the eastern waterfront of the Intracoastal Waterway, is designed to improve pedestrian comfort and make favorite spots like the marina more accessible on foot. Features of the Riverwalk include a fishing platform near the Jupiter Yacht Club, a plaza for waterfront events, and a pedestrian bridge over the lagoon.
Owners of Jupiter, FL real estate don't just enjoy the amenities in town – Jupiter and its neighboring communities of Juno Beach and Tequesta share a Chamber of Commerce, and residents often pass from one community into another to explore a broader range of local restaurants, shops, beaches, and golf courses.
